Rugby Skills Pathway Inc
Rugby Pathway Inc is the not-for-profit arm of Rugby Skills Academy.
The Academy is also about growing the sport at a grassroots level so players have the opportunity to engage in a sport that includes players of all shapes and sizes and cuts across culture, socio-economic background and gender.
It does this by providing free clinics, and if you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please get in touch.
What is the Pathway Program?
At the end of 2017, Onehunga created the Bushrangers Pathway Program: free training to lift the skills and identify talent for players who will play at the next level. With a team of dedicated coaches, Onehunga delivers free sessions in Rockhampton, Emerald, Mackay, Whitsundays, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay.
The idea behind this has been to build up a strong base of players who will be able to hold their own against Brisbane players at the State Championships and also get more players from central Queensland catchment for selection in Queensland Country.
What has been exciting is the increasing number of girls attending the Pathway Program, as the game of Rugby Sevens expands.
What we lack in regional Queensland is the level of competition that players in the south-east corner have, but our players’ skill-set makes up for this.
It has grown beyond this with more than 400 players now participating to improve their skills and confidence. This program also engages local coaches so they can participate and upskill.
The Pathway Program set a goal to get at least nine players into the Queensland Country side for 2018 – three each in the U13, U14 and U16. We exceeded that, with 15 players selected. The previous year, there were just seven players.
This has proven the success of the program, which has been well supported by regional rugby, parents and players.
